Traveling by Motorcycle with a Pet, is it possible?

The answer to the question is it possible to travel by motorcycle with a pet? In accordance with articles 17 and 18 of the General Circulation Regulations, it is affirmative. But when it comes time to travel with a pet, it is necessary to assess aspects such as size and weight, the acclimatization of the pet to the vehicle and the support on which it will be transported.

From the blog of Xenasegur , specialists in motorcycle and quad insurance for mediators and brokers, in this article we take care of the transport of pets by motorcycle or scooter . Through this post we analyze the current regulations and approved accessories available in the market.

Unfortunately, every summer we continue listening or reading news related to the abandonment of pets . Before the holidays, there are still many people who decide to get rid of their pets instead of entrusting them to a family member or professionals in a shelter. And more worrying still: according to the study “Abandonment and adoption 2016” of the Affinity Foundation , this is a practice that does not stick to the summer period. Throughout the year, thousands of animals – especially dogs and cats – are left homeless in our country .

But, fortunately, the other side of the coin is represented by those who pamper and care for their pets like gold in cloth. People who care to take them to the veterinarian, brush them, shelter them and even transport them in their vehicle. In the case of automobiles, there are harnesses, trasportines and dividing grids that make it easy to travel with an animal. But what about motorcycles? Is it possible to travel by motorcycle with a pet?

What does the General Circulation Regulation say?

First of all, it is convenient to know what the law says. Specifically, the General Circulation Regulations , in Article 17 , specifies that “drivers must be able at all times to control their vehicles or animals . ” And in article 18 adds that “the driver of a vehicle is required to maintain their own freedom of movement, the necessary field of vision and permanent attention to driving to ensure their own safety, the rest of the occupants of the vehicle and that of the other road users. For these purposes, you must take special care to maintain the proper position and keep it the rest of the passengers and the proper placement of objects or animals transported so that there is no interference between the driver and any of them .

Related imageAccording to both articles, it seems clear that Spanish legislation does not hinder the transport of animals in vehicles . Now, it is not the same to travel with a dog or a cat in a tourism than to do it on a motorcycle or a scooter . In this regard, adhering to the General Circulation Regulations, to ensure the safety of the driver and / or occupants, that of the pet itself and that of other road users, it is appropriate to consider a series of issues.

Pets on board: size does matter

First of all, the first thing to weigh is whether we are prepared to have a pet . Do we have the necessary economic resources to guarantee food, visits to the veterinarian, etc.? Is our house spacious enough so that it can move freely? Will we have time to take care of the animal? What will we do with it if we have to travel or travel to enjoy the well-deserved vacation?

Taking the decision to adopt a pet, and appreciating that we will ever transport it on our motorcycle or scooter, it is essential that we opt for a small animal . In this sense, a cat will not give us problems, but in the case of dogs it will not be the same to travel with a Great Dane, a Mastiff or a Bulldog , characterized by its large dimensions, than with the company calls (Australian Terrier, Poodle , Pekinese, etc.), much smaller.

Traveling on a motorcycle with a pet: Transport accessories

And once the pet has been chosen – if possible, small and light -, transport it … If the motorcycle or the scooter has a rear grill – if not, it can be purchased separately as an optional accessory in specialized establishments-, the most recommended is to use a trasportín .

As we explained in the article “Luggage on a motorcycle: how to place the load correctly” , it has to be verified that the rear trunk – in this case, the carrier – is perfectly anchored , since if an octopus was released during the journey of subject, the consequences could be serious for the animal and / or the rest of users of the route.

Another option is to opt for a backpack . Logically, it is important that it is homologated , since it will enable the animal to enjoy a certain capacity for movement and, most importantly, that it can breathe – therefore, it is discouraged to use a conventional backpack model . For this form of transport, it is especially important that the pet is small and, above all, that it weighs little if the backpack is to be carried on the back – on the scooters it can also be located between the driver’s legs.

This last -we refer to the weight- can be applied to the breastplates , indicated to transport an animal on the chest in any circumstance but not driving a motorcycle or a scooter . Recalling article 18 of the General Circulation Regulations, “the driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain his own freedom of movement” and it is more likely that a bib overall will hinder the handling of the vehicle .

Once this possibility has been ruled out, it is also possible to use a bag for the deposit, just like the backpack, approved . But, in line with the previous paragraph, it should not be an obstacle in driving . In addition, it should be considered that this type of accessory usually has a weight limitation , so, once again, it is wise to have chosen a small and light animal.

Otherwise – to be the owner, as we have seen before, of a Great Dane, a Mastiff, a Bulldog, etc. – we will always have the option of using a sidecar . If so, experts recommend training the animal to acclimatize to the space and use a sheath that avoids, if possible, leaving it and a dome to protect it from the weather.

The importance of acclimatization

But the issue of acclimatization is not something reserved only for large pets traveling in a sidecar. On the contrary, it is a question that must be put into practice with any animal that is going to be transported on a motorcycle or a scooter .

It is best to familiarize yourself with the vehicle from small through short trips . In this way, in the case of being afraid, being transported will start to see it as something normal and will travel more relaxed. Of course, as with people, in long trips it is convenient to make periodic stops for our pet to walk, hydrate or do their needs.

Already put, it is worth remembering that Article 127 of the General Circulation Regulations makes clear that “it is prohibited to leave animals without custody on any kind of road or in its vicinity, provided that there is the possibility that they can invade the road” . And for those who are tempted to abandon their pet, we will say that this action, considered a crime, is regulated in all the CCAA of our country. As for economic sanctions, they can reach 90,000 euros .

For all the above, it is possible to travel by motorcycle with a pet provided it is done with common sense and responsibility . The law does not prevent it and, in addition, there are approved accessories for transport. In our hands is to make a correct use of them and take care of those who, as the popular slogan would say, would never abandon us.

“The Bridge of Spies”

The English nickname of the “Glienicke Bridge” was “The Bridge of Spies”, one of the Oscar nominated films.

Steven Spielberg’s film “The Bridge of Spies” which sees Tom Hanks as a protagonist was mainly filmed in the place from which the film is set that is set during the Cold War and tells the story of how secret agents made exchanges between the East and West. These exchanges often took place on the Glienicke Bridge, which was then dubbed “Bridge of Spies”, in English. Of course, Steven Spielberg shot the film in this place but also in other areas of Berlin, such as the Berlin-Rummelsburg operating station and the Marquardt palace in Potsdam.

“Mad Max: Fury Road”

The Namibian desert was the set at Fury Road.

The long-awaited fourth installment of the Mad Max series was originally to be shot in the Australian area of Broken Hill. However, due to a particularly intense rainy season the landscape has become much greener than expected. To represent an apocalyptic scenario, fundamental to Mad Max’s films, the director George Miller decided, therefore, to bring the troupe to the Namibian desert in Africa.

“Survivor – The Martian”

Wadi Rum in Jordan

First of all we must disappoint you! To shoot “The Martian” Ridley Scott did not install a set on Mars. The scenes for his film were filmed in Wadi Rum – a place where a river once flowed – in Jordan. This location, with its reddish color, has proved to be the ideal place to shoot scenes that give the impression of being on the red planet, where Mark Watney (Matt Damon) struggles to survive. Some scenes were filmed at the NASA headquarters in Budapest (Budapest Whale).

“The Revenant – Reviving”

Kananaskis Country, Alberta Canada

The director Alejandro G. Iñárritu gave up during the course of all the filming in artificial light and proved to be very demanding with the troupe and with the protagonist Leonardo DiCaprio. However, the result has amply repaid the effort and allows viewers to admire fantastic natural landscapes. The scenes of the film were shot in various locations in Alberta, Canada, such as Kananaskis Country. Even the Tierra del Fuego in Argentina, with its breathtaking landscapes, has served as a backdrop for the film.

Of course we also wonder if Leonardo DiCaprio finally manages, with “The Revenant”, to win the coveted statuette during this Oscar night.

“Spotlight”

St. Michaels College in Toronto

The film by Tom McCarthy, which is based on a true story about a team of journalists from the newspaper “The Boston Globe”, which revealed the scandal of the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church in Boston, was filmed not only in Boston but also in Toronto. The College Church of St. Michael and the Catholic parish of St. Basil served as the scene for the scenes with the cardinal and the choirs.

“James Bond 007: Specter”

Obertilliach in Austria

Obertilliach, is a quiet resort in Austria and was the venue for the latest James Bond film, “Specter”. The Sam Mendes regatta has brought James Bond (Daniel Craig) back on the snowy slopes of Austria, a special location is the Q Restaurant in Sölden. Some scenes from the film have also been shot in Mexico City and Morocco.

“Star Wars VII – The Force Awakens”

The Icelandic island of Skellig

Particularly spectacular places can also be found in the latest film in the Star Wars saga. For “The Force Awakens”, the troupe led by director JJ Abrams traveled to the small Icelandic island of Skellig in Ireland. It is here that the ruins of an early Christian monastery are found, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This place proved perfect to represent the remains of the first Jedi Temple, where Luke Skywalker is hiding.

Other places in the film were the Krafla volcano in Iceland and Rub ‘al-Khali, the Abu Dhabi desert.
